 Currency Georgian lari

The lari is the official currency of Georgia, introduced on October 2, 1995, replacing the temporary coupon currency. One lari is divided into 100 tetri. The international code for lari is GEL, and the currency symbol is ₾.

Lari banknotes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 lari. Each banknote features portraits of notable figures from Georgian history and important cultural landmarks. For example:

  • The 5 lari banknote displays the portrait of the esteemed poet and prince Iakob Gogebashvili, along with images symbolizing education and learning.
  • On the 10 lari note, there is a portrait of the great King David the Builder, symbolizing unity and the prosperity of Georgia.
  • The 20 lari banknote is adorned with the image of Queen Tamar, one of the most significant figures in Georgian history, representing the golden age of Georgia.

Lari was introduced to strengthen the economy after a period of hyperinflation and economic turmoil following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In Georgian folklore and language, "lari" also means "estate" or "wealth," highlighting the national value of this currency.
